<p>What parent doesn&#8217;t want their kids to eat healthier? We&#8217;ve all had to bribe, cajole, threaten and manipulate our children at least once, but wouldn&#8217;t it be nice if we didn&#8217;t have to stoop to such heavy handed tactics? Here are some tips to help you out.</p>
<p>Start early! Don&#8217;t wait until it&#8217;s too late and your child&#8217;s already ruined by sweets and treats. Once they&#8217;ve tasted ice cream, it&#8217;s harder to get them to eat broccoli. And if you&#8217;ve waited too long then you&#8217;ll just have to be strong and realize your kids might not like you for a few days.</p>
<p>Make sure you have a good variety of healthy foods available to your children. This prevents them from latching on to one food or one food group. Sure they&#8217;ll still have their favorites, but a variety of vegetables and fruits will help them to get used to all of their varied tastes.</p>
<p>Try combing foods they like with foods they don&#8217;t. For example, stir-frying onions with zucchini, broccoli, carrots, and snow peas isn&#8217;t as bad as sitting down to a whole plate of broccoli. It also helps to make sure the pieces are small enough so your child gets some carrots with her zucchini.</p>
<p>Be strong! This is very important for teaching a child to eat what&#8217;s good for them. Tell them that this is what we&#8217;re having for dinner and there&#8217;s nothing else for them to eat. They&#8217;ll get hungry enough to eat what&#8217;s served them if there are no other options available.</p>
<p>Which reminds me. Don&#8217;t bring any food in the house that isn&#8217;t part of a healthy food plan. That&#8217;s right! No snacks, cookies, sweetened cereals, pastries, treats &#8211; whatever &#8211; are permitted. This might seem harsh, but you have to decide who you&#8217;re raising; healthy, smart kids who don&#8217;t get sick or fat or sick kids with learning disabilities who grow up to suffer degenerative diseases.</p>
<p>Stay away from people hell-bent on corrupting your children with candy and treats. It&#8217;s amazing to me how so many well-meaning people like a bank teller or a relative offer my children lollipops or cookies. Teach your children to smile and politely say, <br />
&#8220;No thank you.&#8221; And if it&#8217;s a relative that&#8217;s always offering your child a treat, then ask them to stop or stop visiting them (a third option is to make them take care of your kid during his sugar buzz and subsequent crash &#8211; they&#8217;ll never do it again).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another free tip for kids and healthy eating that might fall into the harsh category, but if you think about it seriously you&#8217;ll see how important it is. Don&#8217;t let your kids watch commercial TV. Yes! You read this correctly. The majority of the ads on TV are about food and getting your children to eat these unhealthy foods. TV commercials are the nutritional education for 95% of the population and virtually nothing advertised on TV has any nutrition in it. You&#8217;ll see a huge decrease in your child&#8217;s food cravings when you turn off the tube.</p>
<p>And finally, the most important tip of all is for you to set a great example. How can you expect your children to eat fish, vegetables and whole wheat bread when you don&#8217;t? How can you get them to give up ice cream when you won&#8217;t? They look to you as a role model so you might as well live like one because if you don&#8217;t, then you have no right to complain about their poor eating habits, obesity, ADHD and the time you have to take off work to care for a sick child.</p>

<p>For students, eating at college is an entire new ball game, with late night pizza delivery and food from buggies.  Even though some of these quick and simple options taste great, they are probably not healthy for a student&#8217;s body.  </p>
<p>The food choices students make can affect whether or not they are able to remain awake during class and whether or not they will come down with mononucleosis when it hits campus.  The problem is not only about eating junk food, it&#8217;s more about not getting the proper proteins, carbs, vitamins, and minerals that people need.</p>
<p>When it comes to defending against illnesses, vitamins and minerals are very important.  Just because they are important, isn&#8217;t a reason for students to run out and stock up on vitamins and supplements.  It&#8217;s best for students to get their nutrition from food.</p>
<p>You can find vitamin C in citric fruits, Vitamin A in milk and diary products, and vitamin E in nuts, whole wheat products, and even green leafy vegetables.  This is the ideal way to get nutrition, as your body relies on these vitamins for many reasons.</p>
<p>When you eat on campus, skip on the sodas and go right to the juice machines.  Explore the different entrees available and go to the salad bar where there are fresh vegetables.  You can also try putting some broccoli and cauliflower in the microwave for steamed vegetables.  There are always healthy cereals and plenty of fresh fruit available in dining halls as well.</p>
<p>Always remember that eating healthy isn&#8217;t just about avoiding greasy foods.  Eating healthy involves getting a balanced diet and getting the right nutrients and vitamins to keep your body in peak performance &#8211; or at least awake during your classes.</p>

<p>The body composition of man is always in a dynamic state and hence keeps changing, especially in old age. This affects the nutritional requirements of the body and hence healthy eating can be a challenge particularly for the elderly. Also, in old age the hormones start losing their activity, thereby making the body lose muscles and bones and gain fat. There are some factors, which if kept in check, can help all of us lead a healthy life.</p>
<p>In elderly people, the intake of fat should be limited. This can be achieved by making small changes in your diet like choosing lean meats, low fat dairy products and cutting out fried food. It is important to note that fats should not be totally eliminated from the diet. Since at this age the body starts to lose muscles, proteins become a crucial part of the diet plan. It also helps in building up a healthy immune system.</p>
<p>High quality proteins like eggs, poultry and fish should be included in the diet. Carbohydrates are a major source of energy. However, it is important that older people choose carbohydrates that are high in fiber since it will also help in preventing constipation.</p>
<p>Another major part of our diet is water, which normally gets neglected. As we grow old, the body starts to lose water and hence dehydration becomes a common problem. It is recommended to drink at least 1 ounce of water per 2.2 pounds of body weight.    </p>
<p>Micronutrients like minerals and vitamins are also important. Iron deficiency is very common in old people. It gets aggravated by the fact that the elderly tend to lose appetite and hence eat less food that results in less intake of iron. This can be avoided by incorporating lean red meat and breakfast cereals in the diet.</p>
<p>Calcium is another mineral that is normally deficient in the elderly. The recommended intake is about 1500 mg per day. Elderly normally avoid milk, a rich source of calcium, thinking that it will cause stomach upset. There are other rich sources of calcium like low fat cheese, yogurt, broccoli etc. Another option is to use low fat powdered milk as a substitute for milk.</p>
<p>Zinc intake has been found to be less in the case of older people. Also, it does not get absorbed well in the body. The answer to tackling zinc deficiency is by incorporating meat, poultry and fish in the diet plan.</p>
<p>Vitamin B12 is another critical micronutrient that is commonly deficient in the elderly, more so since it needs an intrinsic factor for it to be absorbed by the body. Our stomach produces this intrinsic factor. Most of the elderly suffer from a condition called atrophic gastritis, which causes stomach inflammation and bacterial overgrowth. This results in less production of the intrinsic factor and hence less absorption of Vitamin B12.</p>
<p>The key to a healthy life as a senior citizen is in staying active and eating a balanced diet. With adequate care and required nutrition, you can ensure that your retirement years become a boon and not a bane.</p>

<br />well not really, you&#8217;ve got a few years to see results! That is plenty of time to change an unhealthy lifestyle. Just find ways of motivating yourself to get there!</p>

<p>With the rise in obesity reaching epidemic proportions in some countries, more and more people are becoming concerned about their diet. Most people  want to improve their diet but find this very challenging in today’s hectic, fast-food environment.</p>
<p>Before embarking on any plan to eat healthier, you first need to evaluate your present diet. How you look, feel, and how long you live can all be affected by diet. </p>
<p>Aim to include a wide variety of foods from different food groups as this will give you more varied nutrients. Each food group will provide different nutrients necessary for a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>A good indicator of the state of your diet would be breakfast &#8211; or the lack of it! A good balanced breakfast will provide the nutrients and energy needed to start the day and help to stop you reaching for the unhealthy, processed snacks. Always look for low-fat alternatives but be sure to check the labelling as processed foods generally contain a higher level of salt, sugar etc.</p>
<p>Drink plenty of water to keep the system flushed through and to remove any waste products. Waste products contain toxins that will adversely affect your health if not cleaned from your body. Water is necessary to maintain a healthy balance of fluids and this also helps with other areas such as skin and hair condition. Something between 6-8 glasses of water a day is generally considered to be sufficient for most people.</p>
<p>One of the main keys to a healthy diet is variety. With a wide range of fresh meat, fruit, vegetables and dairy products now available no-one should be bored with trying to eat a more healthy diet.</p>
<p>Another major consideration is meal planning, as this will give balance and variety within the diet. Deciding what you will eat, and when, can also help with costs and time management.</p>
<p>As all food groups will contain both healthy and unhealthy foods try to reduce, or cut out, the unhealthy ones and replace them with a healthy alternative. Do not feel that you cannot have any treats because you have chosen to eat healthily. The trick is to have an occasional treat as a reward for sticking to your new diet. This will also give you something to aim for as you learn a new way of managing your food. </p>
<p>To summarize,  first look at your diet. Then plan any changes. Be sure to use a variety of food groups to ensure you get the necessary vitamins and nutrients. Check for healthy alternatives and drink plenty of water. Have the occasional treat to keep you on track.</p>

<p>If you and your family love to eat at restaurants, you may think that this lifestyle is not good for a healthy diet. In many cases, you would be correct. However, you can still enjoy restaurants occasionally and maintain your healthy diet. It is all about making good food choices, which start with learning about the nutrition you, need to stay happy, physically healthy, mentally stable, and active. </p>
<p>When you pick up the menu, start by skipping over the drink section. Although you may be tempted to enjoy a beer or mixed beverage with your dinner, these usually have many empty calories, which is not good for your body. The exception to this rule when it comes to alcohol is wine, especially red wine, which can be fine if you have a single glass and can actually help prevent heart disease for some people.</p>
<p> 
<p>Also skip over the appetizer menu, unless it is to order a side salad. The appetizers at restaurants are usually high-fat foods that are not meant to fill you up and can in fact make you crave even more high fat foods. Examples of these are mozzarella sticks, potato skins, and wings. Instead, simply focus on your main course or, if you must indulge, share a serving with all the people on your table. </p>
<p>When choosing your main dish, it is of course important that you look at the ingredients of the dish. Anything with cream sauces or high-fat meats should be avoided, and pass up on the potatoes or onion rings. Instead over side dishes like vegetables or ask for just the main course if possible. </p>
<p> 
<p>Remember too that the size of the portion is everything. Order off the lunch menu whenever you can and split your meal in half from the start so that you are not tempted to eat the entire thing, or always leave some of it as usually it is enough for two portions. </p>
<p>At the end of your meal, skip over the dessert menu, just like you did with the appetizers. Again, you can share a single dessert with someone on the table if you feel compelled to order something, or split your portion in half. Many fancy desserts that the restaurants have contain more calories than your entire meal, so keep this in mind before you call the waitress to place your order! Of course, on special occasions, it’s alright to cheat a little, but overall healthy eating requires a lot of resisting temptation.</p>

<p>By the end of any given weekday, we have packed lunches, kissed foreheads, gone to work, driven carpool all over town, and now&#8230;now it is time to cook dinner.<br />
Here are twenty quick and easy dinnertime tips that can also make for magical family memories.</p>
<p>1. Have lots of fresh vegetables on hand. I love putting out a plate of veggies for my kids to snack on before dinner. Anything that is still on the plate at dinnertime is simply placed alongside our other choices on the dinner table.</p>
<p>2. While you are at the supermarket, pick up some fresh herbs. These take no time at all to throw in to virtually any recipe, but they make all the difference in the flavor of your food. It is especially nice to have fresh basil, mint, and cilantro on hand. </p>
<p>3. Teach your kids about the balance of food on their plate. Discuss how many food groups are represented. To make this more fun, we ask our kids if they are eating a square meal with all four food groups. And if not, is it a triangle, (three food groups), a line (two food groups), or a dot (one food group)? Thinking of their choices in this way helps my young kids to visualize their choices and to strive for a square with each meal.</p>
<p>4. Hang a dry erase board on the wall or the refrigerator with the name of each family member. Beside their name, they can write the number of fruits and vegetables or make a note of the healthy choices they made that day.   </p>
<p>5. Do not assume your kids want or need fattening spreads or sugary sweeteners to dress up their food. Two of my children actually prefer toast without butter, waffles without syrup, and salad without dressing. </p>
<p>6. Chop vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower in a food processor, and add it to soups, pasta sauce, chili or stews. </p>
<p>7. Be a good example. The more healthy foods you eat, the more likely your kids will be to eat it, too (eventually). </p>
<p>8. Use the slow cooker. Often, there are times during the day that are less hectic than the dinner hour. Choose a time that is less hassled and make a quick crock pot recipe. My kids love to help add ingredients to the slow cooker. </p>
<p>9. Make a casserole. Cooking Light magazine features some wonderful quick dinnertime or make ahead casserole recipes (also available online at CookingLight.com.) Casseroles can be a great place to sneak in even more veggies. </p>
<p>10. Use the electric indoor grill. I use mine to take chicken from frozen to the table in less than 20 minutes. And then I grill vegetables in 5 minutes. Everything tastes so fresh, healthy and delicious. I do not know what I ever did without mine.</p>
<p>11. Create a Bar. My kids love sandwich bars, pasta bars, taco bars, and potato bars. Put out the essentials and some healthy fillings and toppings, and you have a great meal where everyone is in control of what they eat. </p>
<p>12. Delivery! We love pizza, and many places (especially the more gourmet pizza restaurants) now feature healthy choices, featuring pizzas loaded with fresh vegetables. We order a veggie pizza and one with just cheese, just in case the kids are not in the mood for spinach on their pie.  </p>
<p>13. There is more to take out than the traditional fatty fast food fare. Find a few restaurants that offer quick, healthy take out. There certainly is no shame in ordering food to go. </p>
<p>14. Involve your children in the cooking and baking process. Focus on creating positive memories before, during, and after mealtime. This can be a fun time of togetherness, so ask yourself: what would make it more enjoyable for your family members? For example, you might let your kids play their favorite music while they help you prepare dinner, make the salad or set the table. </p>
<p>15. Involve your children in the grocery shopping. Let them read labels with you and help you to make healthy decisions for the family. </p>
<p>16. Make meals a family affair. Family meals are tremendously important.  Not only will you be more conscious of what kinds of foods your children are eating, but it will make a ritual out of the family mealtime, which may help to discourage unhealthy snacking before meals. </p>
<p>17. Drink only milk or water with dinner. Soda and other sugary beverages can fill up your kids with empty calories, leaving less room for the good stuff. </p>
<p>18. Demonstrate your reverence for the peaceful family dinner by initiating special rituals even for everyday occasions. Eat on the good china, or try dimming the lights and dining by candlelight. </p>
<p>19. During dinner, talk about the health benefits of various foods on your plate. Before they eat something, my kids will often ask, &#8220;What does this food do for my body?&#8221; And then we explain in regard to the specific food. This may require you to do some research in advance (or as a family) so that you are familiar with the vitamin and nutrient contents of your favorite meals.</p>
<p>20. Turn off the TV and radio and dial up the conversation. If your kids are not talking or they are bickering, distract them by asking about their favorite part of the day. Everyone gets a turn, and you get a peaceful mealtime. You might enjoy it so much that you will want to celebrate breakfast together, too.</p>
