So often when people say they are vegetarian they mean that they do not eat meat. But being a vegetarian is about more than just not eating meat. It is possible to be a vegetarian in the sense of not eating meat and eat a very unhealthy diet indeed.
A vegetarian diet may by high in cholesterol if it relies too much on cheese and eggs. It may be low in fibre if it is based on refined grain products like white bread, white pasta and white rice. If it lacks fresh vegetables you diet will be deficient in vitamins and minerals. You may vegetarian but you may not be eating a healthful vegetarian diet.
Going vegetarian is about more than just not eating meat. It means taking a positive decision to eat a wide range of foods that provide a balanced mixture of nutrients.
It is important to plan the change to a vegetarian diet. This may mean buying some new equipment for your kitchen. If you are used to eating convenience foods you may need to buy some basic items.
The next step is to plan your meals. Not all vegetarian meals rely on cheese, eggs and milk for protein. These are useful ingredients in a vegetarian diet but not by any means essential. It is perfectly possible to get enough protein by combining grains with pulse such as peas, beans and lentils. A bowl of lentil soup with a slice of bread provides all the essential amino you need. Chilli beans and rice combine in the same way to create what is called a complete protein.
A diet based on pulses and whole grains has the immense of advantage of providing you with enough fibre. This is important to maintain colon health. Cancer of the colon is most common among people who eat a diet based on over-refined processed foods. Fibre is one of the key ingredients in a healthful vegetarian diet.
Switching to a high fibre diet takes a little time. Your body needs to adjust. So take things slowly at first.
A healthful vegetarian diet based on wholegrains, pulses, nuts, fruits, and vegetables will also be good for your heart as it is low in fat. The fats you use in vegetarian cooking should be vegetable fats and oils such as olive oil, coconut oil or groundnut oil. There is no reason to exclude butter from a vegetarian diet especially if most of the fat you are consuming is of vegetable origin.
One of the great things about a healthful vegetarian diet is that it helps to mantain you weight at the right level. You will still pile on the pounds if you binge on ice cream but a really healthful vegetarian diet leaves you feeling safisfied so that you are less likely to overindulge in sweet things.

Why am I such a bad vegetarian? Can you help me?
thank you.
Hello there ! So I have been a vegetarian for about- 1 month and a week now? And am not immersed with eggs or milk or cheese and butter, etc. But, you see- this has become very hard- I am a child- and my parents of course- are very disobedient by the fact- the vegetarian fact, I mean. Anyway- its gotten to the point where- I- have been eating butter- and bread with milk- and cheese and so forth.. I am very disgusted by this! I want TO STOP! But- it appears very hard in my mind at times. But this- is very important to me- being a vegetarian. So after a while just turned to vitamins! Oh the galore! Talk about gelatin! I almost about cried! That’s absolutely was horrified. Gelatin? In VITAMINS! NOW YOU’VE TURNED TO THE DARK SIDE? Why must this happen? Goodness- anyway again- I am sacrificing my health- and my sanity to this diet and- its not REALLY WORKING OUT-? So my question to you is- good links? Motivation? Home recipes? Gratitude? Please enlighten me \\at everything will be okay- and that I will be healthy- happy- and enjoy the benefits of animals another way

I understand the circumstances :L and its very interesting because- you really don’t have to do anything you don’t want to or rightfully choose- and if your happy with being a vegetarian then that’s totally fine and up to you- set your mind to it. But if there’s a certain situation weather its your health or just all around trying to stick with it you know- then that’s really understandable and you need to make a choice, anyway good luck, and congrats for going veggie!

It takes alot of willpower to be a vegetarian! So I congratulate you! Woo woo!! I think you can do it, eating animal flesh for a simple snack? Doesn’t seem right does it? Vegetarian Diets are also proven to be much healthier than a Meat eaters Diet. I believe that god put the animals on this earth to eat, yes. But the way they treat the animals now discusts me. I a vegetarian myself. But I’m a lacto-ovu-vegetarian, which means I still eat dairy products and eggs. I have been veg for just a few months! And if your new, which it seems like you are… (lol) you can cheat a little don’t worry! At least your cutting down slowly! Girl power!! Please don’t stop the battle, eventually you won’t even crave meat anymore! And feel free to become lacto-ovu like many of us! Watch a few PETA videos. It will remind you of what your doing— saving hundreds of innocent animals lives! You can do it!!

Before I answer, congratulations on choosing a vegetarian lifestyle. You obviously feel passionately about upholding it and show a desire to go vegan. Thank you on behalf of the animals.
As for your situation, uncooperative parents are a sad reality. Are they uncooperative because they think it’s just a phase that will end if they just wait it out? If so, that can be solved by you confronting them and plainly telling them you are and forever will be a vegetarian, and that nothing can change your mind. If your resolve doesn’t make them at least work around your choice, then they clearly don’t respect your opinions.
If that fails, simply look around when you go grocery shopping. Pick out vegetarian dishes and insist that your parents buy them for you. I can’t guarantee that they will, but unless they want you to starve, they will eventually accept your decision and buy the food you need. As for vitamins, there are brands that produce vitamins that do not contain gelatin or any other animal product. I personally buy Nature’s Plus brand multivitamins.
I wish you luck in your transition to vegetarianism, and hopefully eventually veganism.

You have the choice of eating what you want. If you add cheese or milk once and a while, it is okay. They do make vitamins without gelatin. Check the health food stores.
Your best bet is to plan your meals ahead and let your mom know about it. Have it written down what you would like to eat. I’m sure she will buy whatever she can afford. Show her that soy has the protein you need by looking at the labels. Check stuff online and print off the healthness of dried beans, certain veggies, and etc. Tell her you will make sure you will have dairy once and a while to make her happy. Then ask her to try thing new things. She may even join you in other dishes.
My sister brought a friend over to our house and told my mom that her friend was a vegetarian. We had salad, bread, as well as meat but my mom put bacon in with the green beans. The salad had a dressing on it that the friend couldn’t eat. So it was bread and water. My mom didn’t understand.
I love a veggie diet but my husband thinks it is unhealthy and I’m hurting my self. duh
