My Atkins Diet Story

by admin on April 18, 2010

2 My Atkins Diet Storyaka how one Iowa guy lost over 200 pounds and gained his life back. I can not say enough about how positively the Atkins Diet and low carb in general has been for me. I went from a 429 pound guy who could barely make it up a flight steps to a guy running half marathons and rejoining the National Guard. My health is fantastic, and my blood work (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart) could not be better.

@greeniem Yep, I …
@greeniem Yep, I also gained a new competency of dealing with irrelevant posters…

now you’re skinny …
now you’re skinny and a dork, instead of fat and a dork! Congrats

@atlmycity2 If …
@atlmycity2 If you’ve been on a low carb diet and now you are simply going lower, you won’t lose as fast as before. If you are losing 1-4 pounds a week, that should be expected. If you are losing less than that, watch my “Not losing on Induction video?”

@bowulf ok bro. I …
@bowulf ok bro. I started this diet a few months ago. Only 1 problem when i started My height is 5’11. Fantastic! You’re …
Fantastic! You’re an inspiration. I’m on day 3, and struggling. Your videos are helping.

@LZKS Many PhD’s …
@LZKS Many PhD’s like Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek recommend a ketogenic diet approach as a long term weight management and lifestyle approach. If you really want to clear up all your misconceptions, start watching my misconception series. There is even a long term studies video, which demonstrated its positive health benefit extended from studies lasting 1-2 years to ones lasting 20 years.

bowulf April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

@LZKS I’d suggest …
@LZKS I’d suggest you take a look at the research of Jeff Volek or simply watch my cholesterol video. High fat ketogenic diets actually lower the risk factors for heart disease. It is when you combine high fat with high carb that you lead to metabolic syndrome and heart disease risk factors.

As for brain function, my brain functions perfectly well. Check out Low Carb Zombie video for more information.

As for kidney failure and bone loss, yep- have a video for that one too.

0 for 3, LZKS.

PhDs recommend use …
PhDs recommend use of Atkin only for short-term diet, as resuming to normal diet will restore weight, and when kept on Atkin diet, many health issues arise as mentioned above.

LZKS April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

High fat diet -> …
High fat diet -> increase risk of heart disease. Low blood glucose due to low carb consumption -> dependence on ketone bodies to fuel brain as brain can only use glucose or ketone bodies as source of energy and it needs constant source of energy -> low pH in blood as ketone bodies are acidic -> kidney failure, calcium loss, dehydration, many more.

Well I do consider …
Well I do consider myself a Atkneer even with the refeeds, because I am only doing reffeds twice a month nowadays.

BTW , I´d like to know if you know about anyone who had problems when started using wheat bran , if they had stalls when using it to make home made breads or cakes. I decided to cut on wheat bran because I noticed my weight has long stalled and it has never happened to me back in 2008 even tho back then I had weekly refeeds.

zegonzales April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Refeeds are Ok I …
Refeeds are Ok I think, if done sparsely. You can exploit the “good” anabolic side of insulin without fat gain as long as you only consume carbs and protein in large amounts and stop the process when the glycogen stores are refilled.

zegonzales April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

MMmmmmmmmmmm it …
MMmmmmmmmmmm it depends. I consider myself a Atkneer anyways, I am only doing refeeds twice a month nowadays.

bowulf April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

@zegonzales Happy …
@zegonzales Happy the refeed works for you, but that is obviously not Atkins. I just busted out a 13 mile run today after a serious work-out last night. My weight sets are going up and up. To me refeeds are simply counter-productive if you are looking for consistent performance and improvements as opposed to performance cycling.

zegonzales April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

I had a refeed …
I had a refeed yesterday , I could feel the serious pump. sometimes insulin can be wisely used to work for you, not against you. Its justa matter of knowing how to do it properly.

bowulf April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Well the question …
Well the question is how many of them do you need…

There are no essential carbohydrates unlike amino acids or fatty acids that the body can not generate themselves.

SniperF0x April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

i need …
i need carbohidrates to life!

bowulf April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

I do have a …
I do have a supplement video, and really the only thing I suggest is one multivitamin without iron like a Centrum A to Z, and that’s it. If you have specific needs or symptoms, there are specific ones for each of them, but generally just one multi- is enough.

sunny73823 April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Hi Bowulf,is it …
Hi Bowulf,is it important for us to take vitanutrients and multivitamins daily during induction and what kind of multivitamins should be taken and their quantity?

zegonzales April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

As for me Id prefer …
As for me Id prefer to add only fruit on manitainance, grains only on occasion , because fruits are richer in antioxidants and phytochemicals.

zegonzales April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Yeah, I can …
Yeah, I can understand you now. Someone told me that ACE tends to be much higher than CCLL , now I can understand that. Theres a virtual friend of mine on Orkut that said seh has a CCLL of 30 grams but her ACE is about 70 to 80 grams of carbohydrates.

bowulf April 18, 2010 at 6:06 pm

The best diet is …
The best diet is the one that works for you and is something you can do for the rest of your life. That would be the problem of the cabbage soup diet for me. I couldn’t do that diet forever, so yes in my perspective, Atkins was the perfect diet for me. It certainly succeeded whether many others failed.

Here’s what I would suggest you do- look through my videos especially my breakfast and recipe videos, and see if the diet looks like something you’d like. If the foods look good, then proceed.
