Cholesterol over the years has gotten a bad name and most people view it as something that must be avoided and eliminated completely from their lives. What most people fail to realize because of the misinformation they’ve been fed is that cholesterol is a necessary nutrient that our bodies use to produce everything from cell walls to hormones. It is much like anything else, in moderation it is not a “bad” thing and if you know the foods to avoid high cholesterol it is easy to keep your levels under control.

Cholesterol itself is a waxy substance that circulates through the bloodstream and can be found in all your bodily cells. Most of it is actually made by the body in the liver while the rest we get from the foods you eat. It is when you overindulge in the wrong types of foods that high blood cholesterol levels can occur raising the risk of heart disease and stroke.

The other thing you need to know is that there are two types of cholesterol: HDL, or high density lipoprotein, cholesterol and LDL, or low density lipoprotein, cholesterol. LDL is considered bad and is the primary reason for the health risks associated with cholesterol. HDL on the other hand is considered good and is responsible for filtering LDL out of the blood stream back to the liver where it can be excreted from the body.

The problem most people have when it comes to maintaining the proper amounts of LDL and HDL cholesterol in their bloodstream is through diet. The so called “western diet and lifestyle” that predominates in our culture has lead to this growing problem. The growth of the “fast food lifestyle” both at home and eating out is a direct cause of rising cholesterol levels.

This is a problem that can be readily dealt with by eating a healthy diet of foods to avoid high cholesterol. Fruits, vegetables, whole grain high fiber foods, and certain seafood’s are all good places to start in the fight against high cholesterol. These foods either contain no cholesterol, help remove it from you body (fiber), or they help raise the levels of good HDL cholesterol as is the case of omega-3 containing seafood’s such as salmon.

Foods to avoid that are high in cholesterol include red meats and dairy products. This does not mean you cannot eat these foods but if you wish to lower cholesterol levels then these must be eaten in moderation and choose only lean cuts of meat and low fat dairy products. It is also important to avoid and eliminate sources of saturated fats and transfats from your diet. In studies these two fats have been shown to increase LDL cholesterol levels more then even cholesterol containing foods.

All it really takes when considering which foods to avoid high cholesterol is some up front research. There is a wealth of information available from your doctor, nutritionists, and on the internet that can help you make good choices going forward as you work to lower your cholesterol.

Why Breakfast Is So Important When Dieting

Let’s face it, not everyone enjoys breakfast. While most early-to-rise types are ready for food early in the a.m., many who consider themselves night owls cannot stomach the thought. Unfortunately for the night owls, skipping breakfast has many negative consequences, especially when you are trying to lose weight. While theoretically the idea of eating less food by skipping breakfast sounds like a useful idea, practice has shown skipping breakfast sabotages your dieting successes made later on in the day. How could that be? By missing breakfast one would most likely forgo between 300-400 calories. In fact, 10 days of going without breakfast would cause you to lose over a pound, by those counts. Unfortunately, your body knows that it is running without its morning fuel, and finds other ways around the loss.

First of all, by going without breakfast, we leave our body without fuel for nearly 12 hours or more. Sure, you may not be hungry early on, but by lunch or later in the afternoon when you finally give in, you are sure to over eat by more than those calories you missed at breakfast. This is because your blood sugar has dropped so low by that time that you begin to feel shaky, ravenous and irritable. I’m 14, 5’4, and 117 pounds. I want to lose five pounds by losing two pounds per week. I also run four miles a day. What should my daily meal plan consist of- like breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks? And what are healthy food choices? Thanks.

You already seem pretty trim and you exercise quite a bit. Be careful not to loose too much weight! But some great meal plans would be:

Breakfast: scrambled eggwhites with mushroom and spinach, 1 piece whole grain toast.
Snack: Fruit or unsweetened fat free yogurt with berries
Lunch: Salad filled with mixed greens, radishes, celery, cucumber, tomato, flaxseeds, avocado, and mustard or hummus as dressing.
After-school snack: Kashi cereal bar or a banana
Dinner: 1/4 Cup Brown Rice with Steamed Veggies
Midnight Snack: veggies/fruit, or 5-calorie jello, any unsweetened tea

Breakfast: Banana Blueberry Smoothie (make with fat-free milk or unsweetened almond milk)
Morning Snack: 10 Almonds or Fruit
Lunch: Turkey Wrap (fat free turkey slices with mustard and lettuce on whole grain mini wrap), Source 0% Yogurt Cup

– Yummy Oatmeal: 1/4 cup steel cut oats, half apple finely chopped, 1 tsp. peanut butter, splash of unsweetened almond milk, cinnamon (200-300 cal)

work outs and healthy eating habits for a 13 year old girl?

hi, i need some good healthy ideas for new eating habits. i dont really like meat, so that needs to not be included. any ideas?

Hey.. ur the same age for me…. For exercise I find the funnest thing for me to do is stretch… I took dance for a couple years and stretching helps you seriously SOOO much to be more flexible and helps with other workouts.. And I used to b able to do splits, then stopped practicing and couldnt do them, after 2 days of stretching I can do them again and go all the way down to the floor….Stretching makes me feel really, fresh or something like that….. also find a low bench or coffee table or something and put it in front of your TV, stand with your back to it and bend down till you can supprt your body by holding onto the coffe table.. oput your feet in front of you and lower yourself up and down,…. for eating I usually drink LOTS of water (helps clean your body of toxins and helps if you want sone weight loss) and I am a vegetarian… meat just makes me feel gross and lazy.. I eat alot of raw fruit and boiled egs ( they help us grow cuz the protein) and tahts about it 🙂

honey if you weight that much you are just fine I’m so sick of society putting it in girls head they need to be thin to fit in your perfect just the way you are if you loose weight your going to look sick and that aint cute like my grandmother always said don’t nothing like bones but a dog be proud of who you are and what you look like
