What is the Paleo Diet? It is based on the belief that our prehistoric ate more healthily than we do now in the Western world. It is also known as the Caveman or Paleolithic diet.

The Paleolithic Age is defined as the time between 2.6 million years to 12 thousand years Before Present (BP, Before Physics). Archaeologists designate this as the Stone Age. At this stage in human history, civilization consisted of bands of extended family numbering between 30 and 50 individuals. They kept themselves going by scavenging and hunting wild animals and by gathering a variety of plants.

Since the end of the Paleolithic Age, our dentition and digestion have remained the same while it is our eating habits that have evolved, some would say deteriorated. There are, however, experts who think it is the fact that cave men ate fewer calories and got a lot more exercise that explains why they may have been so much healthier than the couch potatoes of today.

The Paleo Diet is based on what our prehistoric human ancestors consumed. A couple of small scientific studies showed distinct advantages in adhering to this dietary regime. It is interesting that in places like Japan and the Mediterranean, where dietary habits more closely mirror those of prehistoric man, there are lower rates of mortality rates due to the diseases of affluence seen in modern western diets.
