What happens to the brain when a person is dieting?
I’ve heard people get grumpy when on a diet. Some get depressed. I wanted to know what exactly it does to the chemicals in your brain. Do diets change the chemicals so your more happy or sad? Change your personality? IDK, whatever you all know would be great, Thanks!
Well it all depends on what type of diet you are following. If you follow a crash diet there are many health risks! A crash diet is one of the most restrictive types of weight loss plans that you can follow. It involves drastically cutting back on the amount of calories and fat that you take in on a daily basis.Crash diets are recognized by health care professionals and dietitians as being a very dangerous way of trying to lose the excess pounds. Crash diets aren’t only a poor way of losing weight and maintaining healthy weight loss, but they are also very dangerous for your body. There are both short-term and long-term health effects that you could experience by following a strict crash diet.
Mental Health Problems – Crash diets are extremely hard on your overall mental and emotional health. Not only do crash diets cause extreme food cravings, but they can also wreak havoc with your mood: you may find yourself feeling more irritable or depressed than usual when you are on a crash diet. Crash diets can also set people up for serious mental health disorders, particularly eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
Nutritional Deficiency – Low calorie diets tend to be very restrictive, and you will find that you will be unable to eat healthy foods. In fact, long-term crash dieting can result in serious nutritional deficiencies, as a result of eating a poor variety of foods. In particular, crash dieters are putting themselves at risk for:
Iron deficiency anemia
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Potassium and sodium deficiency
Potassium and sodium deficiency is particularly dangerous. These electrolytes are used by your body to ensure proper nerve and muscle function. They play a particularly important role in regulating the way that your heart beats. If potassium and sodium levels become low enough, you could suffer from a heart attack.
Vital Organ Damage – Crash diets are extremely dangerous for your vital organs, including your heart, kidneys, liver, and brain. In order to perform their daily functions, your vital organs rely on energy from your carbohydrate intake. During strict crash diets, carbohydrate and calorie intake is so low, that your organs cannot get enough energy from these sources. As a result, your organs begin to burn muscle tissue in order to get adequate amounts of energy to perform vital functions. If your calorie intake becomes low enough, your body will even begin to burn the muscle tissue that makes up your actual organs in order to provide your brain with sufficient energy to function. This can result in serious health problems, including:
Liver failure
Kidney failure
Heart attack
Stroke
Osteoporosis – Long-term crash dieters frequently suffer from osteoporosis, a disease that causes the bones in your body to become extremely brittle. This is because fast crash diets severely limit your intake of calcium. As a result, calcium begins to leach out of the bones in your body, leaving them particularly fragile. Many crash dieters suffer broken bones, particularly hips and wrists, as a result of their osteoporosis.
If one goes for dieting, it must reduce just calories not all of the diets.
Micro nutrients deficiency can made hazardous change to brain.
Some essential lipids are responsible for functional purposes, if they lack nerve response may retard.

oh no its not that. in a diet everyones has to follow the plan. and the plan is to eat HEALTHY. mostly we are addicted to junkfood we live on burgers, soda pizzas well in a diet nothing of that is allowed.well its for our own good if we follow it. In a diet we only have to eat healthy things like fresh fruits, veges, juices, meat(proteins)etc. so people become a little cranky that why arent we eating our DOUBLE-CHOCOLATE CAKE or CHICKEN CHEESE BURGERS! it is harder for them seee but later on they get used to it and when they see effective results they become happy and stick to their diets!

i diet!
the grumpiness could be down to sugar withdrawal.
if the body is starved of food then the brain will make you crave high calorie foods to make up for lost calories. it depends on whether the person comfort eats or not but normally a diet should not alter your moods or personality

Weight loss via "Dieting" as apposed to a good healthy diet and exercise:
Body and mind work hand in hand at all times, so start… you starve the body, you starve the mind, both of essential nutrients.
The body goes in to survival mode causing metabolism to slow (making it even harder to lose weight)
And, as a response to being starved and under nourished. both mind and body under go several changes together. Hormonal and blood sugar irregularities cause mood changes as well as the feeling of anxiety, stress, craving, emptiness and even depression especially when the dieter eats some thing he/she shoulder and suddenly piles on a couple of lb’s, or because they are knowingly depriving them selves of a necessity.
Now put this against a good healthy diet lifestyle with lots of exercise. There is no great explanation needed here. body and mind chemical balance is as it should be and systems working well You just feel great… refreshed, healthy and accomplished, especially as you start seeing body tone, shape and skin changes to the better. Better breathing, more energy and a general feeling of well being.

That’s my take.
people get grumpy, depressed, tired, and sometimes can’t focus on their job or what they’re trying to do because they deprive themselves of carbohydrates. carbs are the main source of energy for all body functions, particularly brain functions, and are necessary for the metabolism of other nutrients. it doesn’t necessarily change the chemicals in your brain, it prevents your brain from working correctly
